Dulaglutide: Evidence Grade A. FDA-approved / proven in humans.
The honest verdict
Grade A as a diabetes and cardiovascular drug, but the honest caveat is that it is not FDA-approved for obesity and produces less weight loss than semaglutide or tirzepatide. If weight is your only goal, a dedicated obesity agent is the better tool. If you have type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk, it is an excellent choice. We grade the molecule here; for provider comparison and access, see glp1picks.com, our sister site.
Dulaglutide at a glance
- Class
- GLP-1 receptor agonist
- Mechanism
- A GLP-1 analog fused to an antibody Fc fragment, which extends its half-life to roughly 5 days and enables weekly dosing. It activates GLP-1 receptors to increase glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppress glucagon, slow gastric emptying, and modestly reduce appetite. The Fc-fusion design is what distinguishes it structurally from semaglutide and liraglutide.
- Also known as
- Trulicity, LY2189265
- Research applications
- Type 2 diabetes glycemic control
- Cardiovascular risk reduction (primary and secondary prevention)
- Modest weight reduction as a secondary effect
- Forms
- Subcutaneous injection (weekly pen)
- Legal status
- FDA-approved
- WADA (anti-doping)
- Not on the WADA Prohibited List (2025). Not classified as performance-enhancing.
- Evidence grade
- Grade AFDA-approved / proven in humans
How we grade evidence
Every grade comes from a fixed A to F rubric: human-trial strength, not hype or affiliate status. Last verified July 6, 2026.
What is Dulaglutide?
A once-weekly GLP-1 approved for type 2 diabetes with a proven cardiovascular benefit, but never FDA-approved for obesity, so weight loss is a real but secondary effect.

It activates GLP-1 receptors to increase glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppress glucagon, slow gastric emptying, and modestly reduce appetite. How strong is the evidence for Dulaglutide?
FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes with a large phase 3 base. The REWIND cardiovascular outcomes trial in 9,901 patients showed a 12 percent relative reduction in major cardiac events over a median 5.4 years, one of the longest GLP-1 outcomes trials. AWARD-11 established the higher 3.0 and 4.5 mg doses, with weight loss of about 4.6 kg at 4.5 mg. Grade A as a diabetes and cardiovascular drug; note it is not approved specifically for obesity.

Is Dulaglutide legal? (Status July 2026)
Prescription via a licensed provider.
What is Dulaglutide used for?
Dulaglutide is marketed for the goals below. See how it ranks against other peptides in each, by evidence, not hype.
What does Dulaglutide cost, and how do you access it legally?
Typical cost
Varies widely by source and coverage
Pricing depends on brand and insurance, and it is prescribed for diabetes rather than obesity. We do not quote provider prices here. For current provider pricing and access, see our sister site glp1picks.com.
How to access it legally
Dulaglutideis FDA-approved, so the legal route is a prescription from a licensed provider, not a research vial. We don't currently have a vetted partner to link for it, so there's no button here. Ask a licensed clinician about the branded product. We never point you to gray-market or compounded off-label sources.
Trying to lose weight?
For weight loss, an approved GLP-1 beats this peptide.
No research peptide here has proven, legally-available weight-loss data that beats an approved GLP-1. Our sister site compares the options that actually work.
Is Dulaglutidesafe? Side effects & risks
Well-characterized in the diabetes population. Gastrointestinal effects (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting) are the most common and are dose-related. Carries the class boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors (contraindicated with personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2). Watch for pancreatitis and gallbladder disease. Because it is dosed for glycemic control, its weight effect is smaller than the dedicated obesity agents. Not for use in pregnancy.

FAQ
Dulaglutide FAQ
Can I use dulaglutide just for weight loss?
It is not FDA-approved for obesity, and its weight effect (roughly 4 to 5 kg at the higher dose) is smaller than the dedicated agents. It is prescribed for type 2 diabetes, where it also lowers cardiovascular risk. For weight loss specifically, semaglutide or tirzepatide are the on-label, more effective choices.
Where do I get dulaglutide and what does it cost?
We keep provider pricing off this page. Our sister site covers that: for a live comparison of providers and current cost, see glp1picks.com.
How does dulaglutide compare to semaglutide?
Both are weekly GLP-1 agonists, but semaglutide is approved for and produces substantially more weight loss, while dulaglutide is a diabetes drug with a strong, long-duration cardiovascular outcomes record from REWIND. The right one depends on whether your priority is glycemic control or weight.
